Search engines for student use

Hello everyone!

At this time of the year I love to incorporate culture into our class projects. A culture that I would love to begin with is African culture. With this culture in mind, we will be making masks that resemble some of the ceremonious masks used in African tribes. I have listed some websites below that can be really useful in looking up images that can give you some ideas for our mask making! If you have any problems, or come upon another great search engine, let me know!

1. http://www.google.com/imghp
Google Images is one of the most popular search engines on the internet. It is a great way to look up the African masks. Just by typing in your desired search topic into the space provided (which should be along the lines of "African tribal mask," you should be able to pick out some great images. Then you just hit "search" and you're on your way. You can organize these images by size as well after putting in your topic. Located at the top of the page, it says image size and then you can click and scroll down to the sizes you want to take a look at. You will also notice that there is a related search area above the images. This can be really useful if you have been running into the same images over and over. Feel free to click here as long as the search is still focused on the African culture and masks!

2.http://www.picsearch.com/
Picsearch is another great image search engine. Just like google, you type in your topic and then hit "search." Then up comes a page full of images related to your search. You can choose to look at all of the results found for your topic, or just choose to view one page at a time and keep flipping through by hitting the next page number on the bottom of the page. Pic search helps to look at the images in an organized fashion, keeping them in the same size, but telling you underneath the image how large it is.

3. http://www.altavista.com/image/default
Alta Vista image search is another great way to find an image you need for this assignment. When beginning your search, after typing in your topic, you can narrow your search to photos, graphics, buttons/banners. Then you can go on to refine your search to colors, sources and sizes- all before hitting "search." After refingin your search, you can hit "search" and view pages of results. On the Alta Vista site, you can also check on news and look for other informational sites that will help you on our topic.

In all of these websites, you are able to click on the photo to enlarge it, and to go to the original website that it was gathered from. I encourage you to go to the websites and explore what they have to say about the masks and the African culture. Do you notice any trends in the masks? Which ones are your favorites? What materials are used? All of these questions we will talk about in class, so come ready!

Have fun and happy searching,
Miss Fontaine
